I'm so happy for you to have been able to hear the EG live. One of my favorite recordings by him is his Vivaldi sonatas di Dresda CD on Opus 111. So agile.

Had the pleasure of Biondi signing my copy of this CD just yesterday. He remembers this set well! I agree that the recording is a bit dry, and he shows some more restraint, something you don't necessarily associate in his later recordings :)

I believe I mis-identified variation 15 in the review; it should read variation 14 (track 15).

I have to agree with you. I've listened to this recording and I am amazed at what Rannou does here. I have some 30 recordings of the Goldbergs, and the unique, personal approach here has a newness that simply astounds me. This is a recording to listen to over and over, to appreciate the choices that Rannou has made in each variation.

Thanks very much for this review as I wasn't aware of this CD. I have the album of Carmignola & Marcon but I'm not satisfied with it. It seems hard to find a recording that carries on a right balance between the violin and the harpsichord. However, there are two recent albums I'm curios about. One is the recording of François Fernandez & Benjamin Alard that appeared on Philippe Pierlot's label "Flora" in 2009. And now there's a new CD on the label "Eloquentia" that belongs to Harmonia Mundi, of Florian Deuter & Philippe Grisvard. Both album include "extra" sonatas BWV 1021, 1023. Could one of these two be the gratifying record I'm looking for?

Dear author
Interesting comment about Steger/TEC and Corelli. Let me give you some informations:
All the ornaments are original, written by masters like Babell, Castrucci or Blavet. Steger did as first performer in the field of Ancient music a relevant try to present these ornaments from the different manuscripts. And he did extremely well. Not only his technical fundament I find here fantastic, every movement sounds here colorful and shows off the English taste into the music by Corelli. This music is just too virtuoso and I can not imagine a better performer like Steger to do this. And thanks to Mr Steger for all the information about these manuscripts, now I know what is written there and I will teach a lot with this material.
For me it was one of the highlights of this season, latest after the Live concert with these artists in London's Wigmore hall. A phenomenal evening!
Just very short: They are playing only works from Corelli's op. 5.
Steger used only original instruments: Voice-flute in the e Minor, the Common-flute in the No. 4, and the fifth-flute in the No. 7 and 10 (a Soprano recorder in c)
In the ground there is a obligato keyboard part, first played by an organ, then with harpsichord.

Maybe we should learn to understand also other facets of baroque music in general. For the taste of today, of course this music is very much decorated but we should not forget, this is a premiere of new concertos, originally played. The comment about too many ornaments should go to Mr. Castrucci.... Thanks Steger and thanks Cummings for this present!

All the best DME

Hi John,
Have you checked out the recordings made by Goran Sollscher? They're easily my favourite performances of the so-called lute works by Bach on guitar (11 strings in this case).

I'm a great fan of Amandine Beyer, since I first heard her CD of Bach's concerti for violin with her ensemble "Gli Incogniti" (2007). Beyer is one of the leading pupils of Chiara Banchini, but by now she has developed a unique style of her own on the Baroque violin, different than any other violinist I've heard. I absolutely love this new recording of Bach's sonatas & Partitas - a refreshing and pleasing interpretation. As for the chaconne, Beyer recorded a lovely performance of it before, in a CD with the pianist Edna Stern (2005), but the new version goes so much deeper, it feels like she's telling a story in sound, indeed a beautiful journey.
