Bach: Violin Concertos by Guiliano Carmignola and Concerto Köln

This album came out some years ago; when it came out I probably avoided it because of it's soloist. I'd found some of his performances featuring Italian concertos a tad too sentimental in the middle (slow) movements, to the point I felt he'd abandoned historical practice.

This album, surveyed via Qobuz, was a welcome revelation. Carmignola is always clear in the foreground and CK has the chops to take his quick tempos. His own stamp on the solos in terms of dynamics and ornamentation, was satisfying.

As an all-around album, I find little to quibble about. This makes for a very good reference recording of Bach's violin concertos with the bonus of some of his reconstructed concerti.

Strong sound quality and engineering as well, above Archiv DG's usual.
