Among so many recordings already of Bach's late chamber music, this recording offers some subtle details coupled with technical gifts when it comes to the trio sonata, central to this collection of music featuring a…
The premise of this album from the Capricornus Consort in Basel is a simple one: let’s perform music by all the top contenders for the St.
In his collection of writings and esoteric discussions of music and the instruments used to play them harpsichordist and conductor Skip Sempé published Memorandum XXI, which is the best example we’ll get of a type of…

Orchester Le Phénix joins forces with pianist Alena Cherny to perform seven solo concertos for keyboard by J. S. Bach. Curious to me from the outset was a harpsichord set played on... piano. Why? Aren't we past that?

We listen to several versions of the Sinfonia, and two recordings of the cantata.
Gottfried von der Goltz is not a name I often associate with solo material; as a long-time leader of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra (FBO) he is no doubt a familiar name in the field of baroque and early-classical…
I came late to acquiring this recording, published in 2015 on Harmonia Mundi with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. It includes the seven solo harpsichord concertos by J.S. Bach.
John explores favorite renditions from the first suite for solo cello, including from Yo-Yo Ma's new recording on Sony Classical
What first caught my attention in this new album featuring violinist Jonas Zschenderlein and harpsichordist Alexander von Heißen was the relative young age of the duo.
Artists: some strive to be different. We typically get recordings of, say, Bach violin concertos, but this program is more about the performer and his versatility. Dmitry Sinkovsky is director, violinist, and vocalist.
The Korean pianist known as “Ji,” whose full name of Ji-Yong Kim, has recorded Bach’s Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, on his debut album for Warner Classics.
We know Mozart liked Bach’s music, especially this fugues and ability with counterpoint. The opening of this recording is a peresentation of 5 Bach fugues arranged by Mozart and performed by string quartet.
I paid over $30 for a single CD of Bach’s first solo violin sonata (BWV 1001), his second partita (BWV 1004), and the third partita (BWV 1006). I didn’t hesitate.
I am glad I had the opportunity to audition De occulta philosophia first, what I might call a “companion” or “sister” album to this one.
I am not sure where I first encountered mention of this album which was first released in the late 1990s. The reissue has an updated cover, featuring a mess of audio/computer cords that I found interesting (there's a…
A couple years ago, I'd selected a recording by the Modern String Quartet of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier for string quartet, and really liked the interpretation.
3 performances, 3 instruments
I came to Bach’s Goldberg Variations somewhat early in my listening career (which, admittedly is strange to call a career, but I assume you get what I am saying, that period in my life beginning at some point while I…
There was something that turned me off to this release when it came out, which I now realize, had nothing to do with the actual performance contained within.
This is, hands down, my favorite album of 2015. I didn’t expect it. I didn’t see it coming. Matthias Mauté and Co. impressed me before, but not to this level. This is a modern concept album.

This episode looks at the design of Bach's longest motet and some favorite performances
Chris Thile has been playing the mandolin for a big portion of his life; it's really fair to say he's a virtuoso on the instrument, and he came to my conscience through his recording with Yo-Yo Ma of the Goat Rodeo…
Ensemble Caprice performs Bach's Brandenburg Concerti under the direction of Matthias Maute on the Analekta label. Did I need another collection of Brandenburg Concertos? Probably not.

While at home alone today, I'm able to listen (audition, really) some music with Pure Music software. At those insanely loud volumes.
